Jennifer Hudson Stars as Aretha Franklin In Upcoming Biopic ‘Respect’

Jennifer Hudson is set to play Aretha Franklin in the upcoming biopic, Respect. The Queen of Soul is one of the greatest singer-songwriters and artists of all time. Throughout her illustrious career, she won 18 Grammy Awards, over 70 Hot 100 entries, and has sold more than 75 million records worldwide.

Franklin’s influence stretched beyond music and into activism. She helped to usher in Barack Obama during his inauguration in 2009. Franklin died at her home on August 16, 2018, at age 76. Through music and activism, she became a legend. Therefore, she will live on forever.

Hudson fits this role perfectly. The Academy Award winner possesses a vocal prowess and ability that mirrors that of Aretha Franklin. Last night during the BET Awards, J-Hud took the virtual stage to give a performance of Franklin’s “Young, Black & Gifted.” Following the performance, the world feasted their eyes on the official trailer to Respect. During the premiere, Hudson is seen belting out her rendition of Aretha Franklin’s iconic hit, “Respect.” The movie also stars Mary J. Blige, Queen Latifah, Forrest Whitaker, and Marlon Wayans.

Back in 2007, Jennifer Hudson won an Oscar for her role in Dream Girls. She has gone on to win 2 Grammy Award and stays ready for powerful and heartwarming vocal performances whenever her name is called. In this upcoming biopic, J-Hud answers this call with ease. The film is set to release on Christmas Day later this year.
