How Roddy Ricch Knew ‘The Box’ ‘Wasn’t Done’ & What He Added to Make It a No. 1: This Week in Billboard News

Plus, the latest on Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, Maren Morris and more.

Welcome to the This Week in Billboard News podcast, where Jordyn Rolling, Billboard News host and producer, and Gary Trust, Billboard senior director of charts, dive into the week's biggest music news stories.

This week, delve into Roddy Ricch's rise, as the rapper spends a fifth week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "The Box." The song is from his debut LP, Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial, which has spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

The 21-year-old recently chatted with Billboard hip-hop editor Carl Lamarre about the track's origins. "It was like 6 in the morning when I made it," he recalled. "I was in New York. I was, like, eight, nine songs in and I wanted to keep the vibes going and I made the song. Then I put the little door noises at the end … I knew it wasn't done."

The Compton, California, native also discussed his challenging upbringing, musing, "My inspiration [for the song] was my life, I guess you can say."

Jordyn and Gary also cover new details about Justin Bieber's wedding, Nicki Minaj's thoughts on Kendrick Lamar, a perhaps unlikely fan of Eminem's surprise Oscars performance, Janet Jackson's forthcoming album and tour, and what Backstreet Boys thought about *NSYNC back when each boy band was dominating the charts.

Speaking of charts, get up to date on this week's biggest news on Billboard's surveys about Maren Morris, Taylor Swift, Green Day and more.
