Grammys Exclude the Fall's Mark E. Smith from Memoriam Tribute
During last night’s Grammy Awards, organizers paid tribute to a host late music legends, including Chuck Berry, Steely Dan’s Walter Becker, Cranberries vocalist Dolores O’Riordan and more. However, there were a number notable omissions, chief among them the Fall’s Mark. E. Smith.
As Pitchfork points out, the late UK post-post icon was completely left f the Grammys’ “In Memoriam” list, both on television and online.
Also ignored — at least on the televised broadcast — were Can’s Holger Czukay, Hüsker Dü’s Grant Hart, Chicago drill icon Fredo Santana, France Gall and K-pop star Jonghyun ( group SHINee), all whom weren’t included in the three-minute segment.
A longer list names, which included Gall, Hart, Czukay and Fredo, was published online by the Recording Academy last night (January 28). However, Mark E. Smith is absent from that list as well.
As Grammys executive producer Ken Ehrlich told Vanity Fair last year, the selection process for the “In Memoriam” segment is done by a committee 12 to 13 people from the Recording Academy, who pick 50 names “primarily by musical influence.”
