Rhys Langston closed out February by dropping his Language Arts Unit LP on P.O.W. Recordings. To continue the project’s campaign, the Los Angeles-based MC delivers a new video for the album cut “The Governor’s Water Glasses.”
“‘The Governor’s Water Glasses’ was probably the second song I started working on for Language Arts Unit and one of only three and a half that I didn’t produce myself,” he tells hitmusic. “I remember my friend alexanderrrowland (three Rs) posted the beat to his Soundcloud three years ago. I heard it and immediately had the hook in my mouth. I texted him within a day and told him to take it offline and was fortunate he didn’t take offense to that.”

Langston adds, “The song and video showcases one of the album’s concepts really well, namely, breaking expectations. The cut might sound and look like one thing, but a close examination of the lyrics shows something someone might not expect.
“Obviously it might not sound like a Top 40 hit, but would a casual listener wouldn’t expect a song about state-condoned environmental racism to bang so hard without being preachy? With the captions in the video, I wanted to emphasize this lyrical content and leave the visual simple, so people could dig into my words in a more interactive way.”
